My co-worker Lisa reminded me today that Sunday will be my first Mother's Day as a mother. I don't feel like one yet, somehow. But I feel like something. An Expectant Mother maybe. So this year I'm thinking about all mothers and all the interesting connections of mothers and daughters and the strange emotional ties that can link mothers to one another.
Lisa's comment made me think about Mali/Molly/Mollie/. I've been doing that a great deal lately, actually. She may already be born. I wonder where she is and who is taking care of her. If she's eating enough and getting enough hugs. I think about her birth mother, too. I wonder what she looks like. If she has a pretty smile. If she has a soft voice or a booming laugh. What colors she likes. What she does in her spare time. Why she is in a situation that will eventually make her daughter mine - a family tragedy for her that feels like a blessing for me.
Happy Mother's Day Mom, Marylouise and Grandma Lucy. And best wishes on Mother's Day to Mali's mom, wherever and whoever she may be.
