Molly has grown an inch since October 11. Is that even possible? We noticed this morning that she suddenly seems much taller and decided to measure her. Either the 10/11 reading was inaccurate, or she has grown an inch. In a fortnight. She has been sleeping a great deal the last two weeks, and eating really well. Is this common in two year olds? She grew four inches last year and we thought her growth spurt was done. She is now 35 1/4 inches tall, wears size 7 shoes and 3T shirts. Her waist allows her to continue to wear size 12mo pants, though they are now bermuda-short length. She is almost as big as her 5-year old friend Julia.
She can reach the pedals on her trike with no problem now. She can also reach just about anything in the house with the combined new arm and leg length and her near super-human ab strength. She hopped 10 times in a row yesterday, and can do standing broad jump about 12-15 inches. She also loves to hang on stuff, pulling her feet up into a straddle split, or up over her head. "Can you do this, Moms?" she says. "Can you do THIS?" (Answers No and GOD NO!) She asks every day to go to the playground, and is smart enough to know when it's raining we're likely to go to the mall play area. "You can just leave me there and go off and buy something for yourself if you want, Mommy," she says, knowing full well I could never even consider leaving her alone at a playground.
She is also telling funny stories and understanding humor more - laughing at funny situations, making funny rhymes and cracking herself up. Here's a funny thing she told me yesterday:
"Maybe if we go on vacation the fairies will bring you a Band-Aid to put on your chin when your pimple falls off on the floor." She cracked herself up at that one pretty good. I on the other hand keep hoping by the time I'm 40 I'll put the acne woes behind me.
Molly, in true big kid fashion, made the final leap to true unders this month. Huzzah, our diaper budget is now freed up for home improvements. It's amazing what a sticker chart can do for motivation. That, and unders she chose with Curious George and My Little Pony on them. The fact that she also loves Thomas the Train led to a very interesting discussion in the Target toddler aisle when I had to explain to her that Thomas was on the boy undies, and boy undies are different from girl undies. Thank goodness Curious George is being brand-marketed to girls complete with pink and purple and spangles.
(By the way, just because she is into Thomas Train, does not mean we are. We are still creeped out by the show and the overwhelming brand marketing surrounding it. Though her train set is Thomas-compatible, we continue to stand by our belief that the Thomas merch is a fantastic way to part with substantial sums of money in a hurry and we have no use for it. Other Brio train merch is wonderful, reasonably priced, and we love it. Spend the difference on award-winning books. And while we're on the topic of being creeped out by brand merchandising, we have little or no use for Dora, Sponge Bob, Blues Clues or any any any Disney products. Do other parents watch these shows? What are we doing to their little minds with stuff like this? It's cheedle for the brain.)
Tonight is the first night of kid-safe, (and generally heavily corporate-sponsored) Halloween fun. We're off to the Living History Farms event tonight. Tomorrow is a friend's Halloween party in the morning and the Zoo's Night Eyes, non-scary trick or treating and holiday-lights train ride at night. Beggar's Night we'll go to a few porch-light-on houses on our street between 6 and 8 pm, and on the actual Halloween we and every other Iowa child will sit home and watch tv. Is everyone really so estranged from their neighbors that good old trick or treating is just out of the question?
Also, some timely information about candy. The best strategy from a tooth-health perspective, is to gorge on candy once or twice a year. The best strategy from an obesity perspective is to eat one or two pieces a day. Rot your teeth or risk unhealthful weight gain. You decide. We're choosing tooth-health this year, since Molster is a bit on the skinny side with all her recent vertical gains.
