Molly is a big girl now

It's Birthday week at chez us. We kicked off the festivities with Molly's birthday party on Saturday. A tea party with five friends complete with herbal iced black cherry berry tea, little sandwiches, cake, mini chocolate cupcakes with flowers coming up, and vanilla ice cream. We danced a few of Molly's faves (I'm a little teapot, hokey pokey, happy and you know it, had a story read by Auntie Naan and made a project - all things Molly requested. Toward the end it started to get nice enough to blow bubbles and do chalk outside, which was nice for burning off a little sugar energy. We are just amazed at how big she is getting.

Molly picked out an email greeting card for Grammy this morning, and we'll celebrate my birthday tomorrow with dinner out at a new Vietnamese place in town. Thursday is her real birthday - we'll just celebrate at home with some cupcakes I made. And we'll probably put together her big girl bed over the weekend. Time flies.

New achievements:
Blowing soap bubbles by herself
Going up and down stairs with no help
Putting herself to sleep on the sofa at naptime
Naming her stuffed animals ("friends"), and assigning genders to them
Tunefully singing many songs - ABC's, Yankee Doodle, Mary had a little lamb, Ring around the Rosey, I'm a little teapot, and many others, even Christmas carols she remembers from December.
Jumping up and down and forward
Jumping off the wall to Mommy in the pool at the Y (also kicking, blowing bubbles and putting her face in the water)
Showering without tears
She knows her letters and numbers (up to 9)
She can count to fifteen without prompting
She covers her eyes, counts to ten (totally peeking) then says "Here I come" when we play hide and seek
She walks 5-6 blocks before wanting to be carried
"Wrapping" her toys in paper napkins, blankets, clothes, putting on a "bow" made from small colorful blocks, toys or whathaveyou, and giving them to people as "presents"
Drawing birthday cakes (?!) and "grocery lists"
Saying please and thank you (when reminded and occasionally without prompting)

If you call her "baby" now she says, "I not a baby. I'm a kid!" or "I'm big."

If you ask her how old she is she says "I'm one!" holds up her finger and says, "My birthday is coming up." If you ask her how old she'll be on her birthday she says "I'll be two" and holds up her five fingers.

Mol is talking like crazy, and loves to be the center of attention. She has a running commentary on everything that is going on around us. She's shockingly observant at times and you can see the gears turning in her head as she puts together her thoughts into words. She's still amazing us with her ability to use words she knows to explain things she doesn't know the word for ("I want the goldfish that aren't pretzels"). She has started telling us about things that happened during her day, or the previous day. "I was on sofa at night. I heared an owl. It was very very LOUD. I'm scared."

She's trying really hard to understand the days of the week and how to use them, and the words today, tomorrow and yesterday.

She just came to me and asked for a snack. I asked if she wanted a rice cake (which she loves and we've been out of for about a week). She said "We have RICE CAKES?!" I told her I finally remembered to buy some at the store and she said, "Yes, I want a rice cake" in an absolutely amazed tone. When I told her I bought the kind with tamari and seaweed she said, "seaweed?" She studied it, shrugged her shoulders and took a bite. I can hear her crunching away on it from the living room.

What a kid. We are so lucky. I just love her so much it hurts sometimes.
