Laboriously Enjoying Labor Day

We were all quite surprised to learn that this past Saturday was actually September 1st (although Molly was less so). September means that summer is over. No matter that Labor (Labour?) day was pushed off to the 3rd of September or that we won’t fall back until sometime in November, turning the calendar to September means fall is here. Football has started, Halloween decorations are up in the stores, people (and you know who you are) are worried that the Red Sox will fold, and the heating & cooling company is calling to arrange a furnace tune-up. ***Sigh*** It seems like summer was just getting started.

To do Labor Day right Cheryl has been doing a lot of laboring. This weekend she finished the huge project of repainting our front porch (Molly and I just played and danced). Like any good project, the new question is whether we should remove the carpet and expose the old wood flooring? However, not be left out, I did recently finish building Molly’s new play-set. We are casting about for a name: “Remember the Mol-A-Mo!”, “Fort Ticonda-Molly”, or “Fort Molly-Defiance”? The play-set does have a captain’s wheel, so it may be better christened a ship: “The Jolly Molly”, “The Molly Sark”, or “The Mol-quod” Thoughts?

We were able to finish summer off right. We made it to the last Friday night I-Cubs game so Molly could watch the fireworks (“I like the sprinkly ones”), but she was more captivated by the food race. They had one of those hot dog v. taquito v. egg roll races around that bases between innings. For the rest of the weekend Molly would tell anyone who would listen about the the hot dog with a face on it. We also made it to a cookout or two and caught up with friends we haven’t seen much this summer. All in all, it was a nice long weekend, if not a surprising end to summer.
