2008 U.S. Transplant Games

It started innocently enough by hopping on the Team Iowa charter bus at 9:00 PM (Doug joined me at 10:00 in Grinnell) on Thursday. Seventeen hours later, we arrived in Pittsburgh. Let the Games begin! Alan and Sheila we waiting for us and Cheryl and Molly arrived from Philadelphia just in time to head over to the Pirates games. Turns out the Molly is Cardinals fan. Who would have thought?
Saturday, Cheryl and and the other Team Iowa swimmers kicked off the competition. Not one to waste time, Cheryl cranked out a bronze medal in the 500 freestyle to start her virtual triathlon (however, Molly did ask why Mommy wasn’t standing on the top step). And Team Iowa took home three medal out of the first four swims.

After a Team dinner and photos, we joined 5000 other close friends at the D.L. Lawrence Convention Center for the opening ceremonies. No matter how many times we hear variations of individual transplant stories, it still brings tears to your eyes. It also ends up being a very late night.
And this morning, was a very early morning. We were all up at 5:30 in order to be at the 5k race starting line 7:00 AM. Molly was a trooper, but admitted that it was way too early in the morning to be awake. With Molly as her teammate, Cheryl took off 8 minutes from her time at the last games and finished 6th in her age group. Not to be outdone, Doug was the fastest living donor, finishing seventh overall and taking third (bronze medal) in his age group!
Unfortunately, we missed his medal presentation as Cheryl had to be back at the swimming pool for the 100 backstroke. Since Cheryl has never competed in backstroke at any distance, she decided to take home the gold medal. She never ceases to amaze. Any yes, that is Larry Hagman.

This evening was Team Iowa’s premier event, 3-on-3 basketball. We missed the first game while eating supper, but Team Iowa easily won the first game. The second game, however, turned out to be too much...for both Molly and the team. Molly crashed early in the first half while Team Iowa lost a two point heartbreaker to end their run.
Tomorrow is Cheryl’s rest day. We are hoping to take cyclists over for a test run around the bike course. Cheryl and Doug will attend the living donor celebration and maybe we will watch some track and field.
Go Team Iowa!
