Making lemonade

Molly and her business partner, who we'll call Maddy, had a very successful joint venture in the restaurant business last weekend. During our two-family yard sale the girls set up shop with a picnic table, sign hand written by Maddy, age 5 1/2, and two big pitchers of pink lemonade. What we all learned is this: Cute sells lemonade! The girls brought in gross sales of nearly $25.

What's that old expression about when life gives you lemons?

Jon and I are now considering going into the lemonade business ourselves, based on the excellent market research their stand has provided, and the economic downturn that has led my little cottage writing/design industry to be our major breadwinner.

Layoffs suck, but we're keeping on keeping on, and optimistic that Jon's top-notch resume and networking skills will keep us in the Des Moines area. We'll keep you posted. Meanwhile, if you know of any viable job opportunities we'd love to hear about them.

We're working on the house and enjoying having Daddy around to go on bike rides and visits to the wading pool at Ashby Park. I've started clearing out the guest room to convert to a home office, in anticipation of ramping up my business a bit. I'm looking forward to having a space to contain my various materials and supplies, as well as a quiet place to work. The ramp up is a year ahead of schedule, but I'm enthusiastic and finding some good prospects. Sorry visitors, tax laws say you'll now have to sleep in the living room.

We had a great visit back East for the week of July 4. Uncle Tommy was kind enough to wait up for Molly and me until NWA decided to get us to Boston. We arrived at his house 6 hours later than originally scheduled thanks to a late-night side trip to Manchester, NH with bonus bus ride to Boston, and found him soundly sleeping on the sofa, his cellphone in hand. (Thanks Uncle Tommy!) A quick trip to Amherst brought visits with Grammy and Grandpa, The Howells, Aunt Katie and Uncle Chick, Larry, Laurel and their very grown up kids, and Uncle Pete, Auntie Kay Luther and Erica. Whew. Then back to the Plymouth and the Cape for fun times at the beach with Uncle Tommy, Auntie Cakes, Maura, many many of their friends, the MacGonnigals, Auntie Jane and Tim. We've filled up our souls for awhile with visits to favorite beaches, and some fantastic memories of fireworks, hot dogs, smores and bonfires on the beach with the relatives. We've also filled up a few ziplocks with beautiful shells and rocks we couldn't live without.

We're still a go for the World Transplant Games in Australia. I'm training as much as I am able, given a recent diagnosis of a stress fracture in the 3rd metatarsal of my left foot. After hobbling around on it for over a month I finally went for an x-ray. Walking cast or boot will be decided tomorrow, but I can still ride my bike and I will continue to train for the 5K and 20K. Running appears to be out. Oh drat. What I've learned from this is never try to run 3 miles in flip flops, even if it's for a scavenger hunt/race that is really fun.

Off to the bike trail!

Cheryl
