I am pretty sure I could count on one hand the number of days I have spent sitting around the house over the last 3 years... seriously. Kate and I have been up to something fun and exciting literally every weekend, save a few, since we started dating 32 months ago. I realized a long time ago that I truly lead a charmed life, and that I can't complain about a thing. As Shirl pointed out in her last entry, a tragedy like Katrina has a way of coming along and (hopefully) putting things in perspective for those who haven't been directly affected. It is so important to be thankful for the little things we take for granted and not dwell on the negatives.
Anyway, so here I am on a real "day off." We certainly did go do something fun and exciting this weekend (we went to Boothbay Harbor, ME and got engaged!), but we ended up being able to sit in our PJs this morning because of the Monday holiday. Kate and I are about to play some tennis, then head to the beach, but I thought I'd take opportunity to catch up on all the postings I've been missing. Next week, I start classes for my Master's degrees, so who knows how well I'll do at keeping current!
We have a new person at work this month. She is in her mid-thirties and and moved to the US from China 5 years ago. I went to lunch with her the day she started and I told her that my sister is adopting from China. She asked, "Why would she do that? There are no babies here?"
After getting into it more, it was clear that she had NO IDEA there was a problem with unwanted babies in China. She decided that it must be a problem in the countryside where they want boys to work in the fields, but it couldn't be going on the city.
I am totally blown away. Am I missing something? Does this problem only afflict parts of the country? I have forgotton what city she is from.
Is the reason she has no idea due to the fact that China has a communist government? Do they keep their people in the dark when it comes to social problems? I wonder if the only people who know about the problem are the people who have to abandon their babies?
On a lighter note, the pictures of the house look great. How exciting!
Shirl, you mentioned digital photos, but you didn't say which site you use. Here's a link to our Webshots page http://community.webshots.com/user/tomkat18
(I'll work on wittier captions).
I guess that's all for now. Molly will have to be a big girl to fit "Rainford-Dreibelbis" on the back of her softball uniform!
