It's been a big week at our house. Saturday we went over to Phoebe's house to play and eat bagels together. It was great to see her whole family - we've missed them since coming back from China.
Sunday we went to Grinnell to visit Anne, the girls and Shirley and Ladnor. We went swimming at the local pool, which Anne rented for an hour. Molly loved splashing around in her new swim suit and even put her face in the water volunarily several times. We were amazed that she swam for the entire time with no complaints at all, in fact, she grinned and squealed and giggled much of the time. Yummy dinner of Cuban pork roast with sweet potatoes and broccoli (all things Molly loves) and delicious cookies in the shapes of zoo animals, decorated by Emma and Bea.
Monday Molly and Jon woke me up wearing party hats. We had a little birthday party in our PJs complete with flags and birthday banners. Jon made pancakes and let me open presents before he went to work. Molly was baffled but loved chewing on the ribbons (she had to swat Cordelia out of the way to get to them). After some rainy day shopping, we met Auntie Yvonne for coffee and a cookie at La Mie. She brought the world's most glam diaper bag (black, with a shiny purple lining and a rinestone clasp. We'll look fabulous at Molly's birthday party tommorrow!) filled with some truly awesome clothes. Molly went to sleep early and we ordered dinner from Chef's Kitchen and watched the rerun of Sopranos and felt like grownups for a few minutes.
Tuesday we had our appointments with the dentist. Molly's teeth are fine and she doesn't seem to be having any troubles - so that's a relief. We went to lunch after and she enjoyed eating spinach quiche, grapes, a strawberry and some fresh pineapple from my plate. I think she ate most of my lunch, actually. Then we did a little shopping in Valley Junction and took a walk in the afternoon with Phyllis and Sam.
Wednesday we sang Happy Birthday to Molly a lot during the day, took her to A Dong for congee, noodles, tofu and curried chicken (yes, that's right, she loves it). Everyone oohed and aahed over her. The waiter even played along with her game of "I throw the sippy cup on the floor, you pick it up. Funny!" We came home and opened presents in the living room. She loved everything, especially the ribbons, tissue paper and a Sesame Street themed bag from Auntie Kay and Uncle Pete. We got a lot of phone calls to wish her happy birthday, ate some of the cake I made, then she crashed hard at bed time. I think she realized it was her special day. I hope it was a happy one for her - I know Jon and I were both thrilled to get to spend her first birthday with her.
Thursday, we went to a playgroup with other GOL families at the Merle Hay Mall play area. Fun for all, reading and chewing books (yech), stomping on a slippery, squishy butterfly and running laps around the play area. It seemed like a good group of people to be with on her finding day. (Below is a photo of us at her finding place, the Old People's Palace.)

The Martini Club came over to play at dinner time. She ate toddler stew, green beans, tortillas, granny smith apple, pretzels, and a bunch of frosting - much to the amusement of our friends. It's amazing what grown people, normally serious grown people, will do when confronted with an adorable baby. My favorite memory of the evening was seeing three of our guests on the floor playing with party hats. That and the several rounds of Peekaboo throughout the evening. Molly even managed to convince everyone to take a turn helping her climb up and down the stairs, by asking them if they wanted to see her room. (Score one for Mom and Dad and their tired backs!)
Today it was an outing to Ames, to the Pumpkin Patch and Jimmy John's for lunch. She did very well on the trip, napping both ways. Everyone loved the hat Yvonne made for her, saying it was the cutest hat they've ever seen. (I'll try to get a picture to post.)
Tomorrow is Molly's Big Birthday Party with law friends, mostly. We're excited to see everyone and for them to meet Molly.
The milestone update:
- Words: That (What's that). Touch (I want to touch that). Teddy (her favorite bear). Daddy (her favorite guy). Hi (sort of, it's more of a falling tone then rising tone hIIIIIIiiiiyyyy. )
- Games: Chasing Daddy. Peekaboo - in its many different forms; I drop it, you pick it up; Molly-zilla (you have to see it to understand); row-row-row-your boat; Here-you-go-thank-you;

- Activities: Teething teething teething! and drooling (relatedly); climbing stairs holding our hands; walking holding one hand; rolling a car while on all fours; standing up in crib and traversing around it; standing up by pulling side of sofa, holding coffee table, pants leg; putting magnets on and off the fridge; putting things in and out of containers; waving hi and bye; laughing at faces in mirrors; giving kisses; reading books (over and over).
- Book I've memorized this week: And here's to you!
- What's funny (to her): Sneezing; burping; foofing; spitting; surprises; funny faces; funny noises; hiding and finding; a squeeky rubber ducky she can squish; any new things she can do! Mom wearing a hood. Anyone with a hat that is too small or too large.

- Something new she did today: Made a pig sound by snuffling her nose.
- Things she has eaten today: Apple, Cheerios, wheat bread, turkey, one bite of tomato, rice cake crackers, Annies ranch flavor bunny crackers, Multigrain Chex, a pretzel, Banana Mango Carrot juice, beef spew- I mean stew.
- One thing I'm surprised I've said in a serious tone this week: It's not ok to put food on the cat.
