As an aside he says, "My wife always says 'nerve-wrecking' and I correct her. She says it's the same thing and I'm sure she's right except she's not."
Just between us, I think she's right on target with that. And yes, it sort of is, except that we are resigned to it - we never really had the option so it was never a big issue for us. We'll just fill out the paperwork and get it properly notarized signed and stamped and she'll be our American daughter of Chinese birth. Anyway, Jim also had this to say.
"One gets the impression the Chinese are ashamed of their problem and not really sure how to handle the fact that female babies are unwanted in too many cases. It seems that after the adoption, China wants to pretend they never existed as Chinese and certainly never wants the baby to come back in any form to haunt them."
I think this is an interesting thought, given what Tom's co-worker had to say about the situation.
We spent the weekend painting the addition and kitchen. I have this to say: Man is that a lot of green in the kitchen. Here's the conversation Jon and I had today:
Me: Wow is that a bright green.
Jon: Yes. It's loud.
Me (shouting): What? I can't hear you over the green paint.
It turned out more the shade of some sort of nefarious chemical that would be shot into space to dispose of in a Marvel comic than the somewhat organic granny smith apple green we were trying for. If you look out at Phyllis' backyard there's a hosta the same shade and one tree looks this color when the sunlight hits its leave.
But we were finished by 4:00 so I can't complain.
