Molly and Daddy's Big Adventure - Day One

Molly and I are on our first multi-night trip without Cheryl and so far the worst thing that I have done is allow Molly to try and saw her thumb off. She didn't succeed.

Last night, after work, Molly and I drove to Osceola, Iowa and caught the Amtrak to Denver. If on time, the train picks you up at 8:00 and you arrive in Denver at 7:00 AM a little worse for the wear. Last night the train was only an hour and half late. But once we got settled, the ride was uneventful. We made a trip to the bathroom, watched the night from the lounge car, and visited the snack bar for some chips. My only tactical (or is it strategic) error was choosing our seats at the front of the car. The extra leg room was nice, but they do not turn off the light over the doors between the cars. Then there are those doors. I have no idea what people were doing, but it seemed like someone was opening and closing those doors every fifteen minutes, the entire night. It didn't seem to bother Molly, she seemed to have had a good night of sleep. Maybe our problem at home is that it is to too quiet?

Molly was in great mood this morning when Bumpa picked us up and took us to breakfast. Whipped cream on pancakes also seemed to help. After we got settled in and cleaned up at Granma and Bumpa's home, we headed out for a visit to the Denver Children's Museum of Denver.

The CMD is similar to one we visited in Lincoln this spring. There was a grocery store, fire engine, vet's office, backyard tree, building workshop, and painting room. The thumb incident occurred in the workshop. They have bins of wheels, cartons, and plastic containers that kids can saw, drill, and bind at little kid sized workstations. Molly eagerly grabbed a plastic bottle, put it in a vise, and before taking a saw to it, put on her safety glasses ("Safety First!" she said). In the instant it took for me to turn to put my bag down, Molly tried to saw her thumb off. Actually, it was just a nick above her thumbnail that bled very little, but it did bleed and it was her sucking thumb.

In the backyard tree area, there were slides and tunnels to climb through and backyard animal costumes for the kids to dress up in. Molly ran around in a squirrel outfit (Mr. Nuts?) and collected giant soft acorns. There was also painting, shopping, and some care of wounded animals (however, Molly was more interest in running the computer and answering the telephone).

After a snack and some playground time, we made it back home to meet Mac and Jacob after school. Lots of playing ensued, including more playground time and dinner, before Molly finally crashed with a belly full of hot milk.

More fun tomorrow.
