Well, we got a cab to the airport at 1:15, driven by a Pakistani who gave us a Chinese 101 lesson, then met up with our friends, flew to Denver, our connection to LA was late but we arrived in plenty of time to eat some dinner and catch our flight, we saw Mark, Sarah and Julia off to their next flight on a different airline/flight than we were taking, then met up with the other five couples in our group, boarded the plan for Guangzhou at about 11:00 and waited. Then we waited some more. Finally the pilot announced the plane would not be leaving and we were to get a hotel room for the night. There was a crack in the door and it had to be taken somewhere for a repair. We won't leave until tomorrow night. They served us a lovely dinnner, though. So we get to try again tomorrow. Same time, same place. Unfortunately that means we may not get to go to Beijing.
It's 2:30 am in LA and we're in the Holiday Inn airport on the 9th floor overlooking a McDonalds, by some freeway that goes to Long Beach - courtesy of China Southern. Not quite what we expected. But, we both agree we'd rather be a day late than on a plane that falls from the sky due to an equipment malfunction. We'll head back to the airport tomorrow about 7:30 pm. Then, who knows where.
It's frustrating. It's very late in the Midwest right now and the hotel says we have to check out at 12:00. It's their policy. We're going to try to sleep for a few hours and we'll be off on another day of this adventure.
Stay tuned.
Ciao,
C
